I’m actually not sure how I feel about this idea, because on the one hand I think it would make a lot of sense for her to try to fix the mess she’d caused, and I can’t see her sitting by for 7 years and doing nothing while her country goes to hell around her.  Impa would probably be ticked every time, but Zelda doesn’t care.  Because she’s a BAMF.

But then, I feel like the execution could get problematic and icky if I ever attempted to write it out.  Because she doesn’t fix everything.  Link has to do it.  And it could be a really fine line between “Zelda’s painful destiny of failure” vs “well, at least a man shows up eventually to get the job done.”  Ick.

Yeah, but that’s mooostly Nintendo’s fault because you’re working within the ‘dude fixes it’ structure set up by them, which unfortunately only has so much leeway. You get a free pass in my mind because, while intent isn’t magical, your intentions rock and my intentions are the same and we both know that Zelda’s a fucking boss and it’s fine if Link got a helping hand once in a while. 

It might help to focus on Zelda taking on battles Link could never win—things that involve leading teams and ‘the big picture’ and tough choices that aren’t just jumping at the right time, but also choosing who you haul off the crumbling ledge with you. I mean, she had to choose to save Ruto and leave everyone else. Like…if she wasn’t around, there wouldn’t be nearly as many people around to save

(and there aren’t that many to begin with, actually. Ouch) 

And also there’s the whole ‘blade of evil’s bane’ thing. I’m sure a few things would be a lot easier if Link wasn’t locked in the sacred realm WITH that sword. It’s almost like SOME people might be able to USE That over on THIS side of things, Rauru. Oh what’s that? It’s ‘Destiny’? He’s the ‘Hero of Time’ and I’m not? FAT LOT OF HELP YOU ARE. 

it’s just important she’s not sitting on her hands, y’know? She looks at Destiny and she’s like “If I have to play a part in your goddess damned plan, it’s gonna be getting shit done. As much shit as you will let me within your BULLSHIT strictures. Thanks for the short stick, excuse me why I use it to poke holes in as many of Ganondorf’s plans as I can.” 

Oh, Nintendo.  Ohhhh, Nintendo.

But, yes.  Good.  Zelda leads relief efforts and sabotages and evacuations and counter intelligence.  One time she shot Ganondorf in the arm and then barely escaped, and it didn’t hurt him, but he did bleed a little bit and she told that story to the Gorons when they were ready to give up and just leave.

And Darunia shot up and screamed YESSSSSS

and made her dance too

and the Gorons were so pumped

(and then captured, but at least that didn’t happen NEARLY as much to them as the hylians wow y’all suck)

Either way Link is about to die.

Not that it’s really helpful, but do whatever the hell you want. Seriously. If you think that Link, as a character, would make a better girl than a boy, go with it! It will also be helpful developing your writing style to take something that was already created and twist it…

Now the next problem… Link is a terrible name for a girl. But I’m not sure changing it is legal? I mean it’s iconic to his/her character. If I do, I’ve already decided that when she’s lying and pretending to be a boy, she refers to herself as Link. Which is actually going to happen a lot, so there’s that.

So I guess now I just need a lady version of it. The only thing I can think of is Lucy. And. No.

Actually I just realized that Link being a girl really fucks up the end of the first chapter.

Unless.

Unless no one realizes she’s a girl.

And I blame Blu and Emi (and maybe Rose a little), for it because they are amazing people who make you just fucking THINK.

Any, so problem: I don’t really have a strong female character in my thing. I realized Zelda doesn’t count. She’s a whiny, bratty, teenager because she’s a princess and she gets everything she wants because her dad is a terrible dad. Not really a role model-esque character. Although she grows a bit by the time everything’s done, but not much.

So I looked at my other characters and I guess I should be rather proud that like half of them work as a boy or a girl. So there will be genderbending there (because for some reason a lot of them are boys right now?!?), but it still doesn’t solve my leading lady problem because they are all technically side characters. I only have like three main peeps. And one of them has to be a dude. So that leaves the last sheikhan and link.

The only problem I have with making the sheikhan dude a woman is that I really really like the idea of a crotchety old man chilling in a forest with a little peppy fairy lady who’s ridiculously optimistic for 20 years or whatever it is. If I got over that, he could totes be a she. But. That’d be hard. :(

So that leaves Link. As a girl. HMMMM. I just… that would actually drive the plot a bit more too. And would lead to an interesting twist to the sequel that’s still brewing. Buuuuuut I’m just super hesitant to do that, because of all the genderbent Link that’s already out there (although not necessarily in serious fic form?) and I kind of feel like it’s a copout but at the same time the more I think about it the more I’m like “Ya know what, I want to try that.”

Also I am worried about writing from the perspective of a pre-teen boy because I was never a pre-teen boy. Whoops.

Although now that I write all of this down I remember my villain gerudo lady is pretty badass.

NO OKAY SEE HERE’S THE PROBLEM. I KILLED ALL OF THE GERUDO. D: WHY DID I DO THAT. THEY ARE THE BEST. GANON YOU’RE AN ASSHOLE FOR KILLING THEM AND I’M A TERRIBLE PERSON FOR MAKING YOU KILL THEM. AAAAAUUUUGH.

Okay, so, before I run to bed, these are the first costume passes for my Good Guy Ganny verse.

We’ve got Ganondorf in his normal desert wear. I assume after some point he’s gonna get a costume change, though hewill notbe wearing Link’s iconic green tunic. Link’s totally rocking that, though I wanna make it a little more peasant since…that’s what he is. I assume that, when he’s under Zelda’s control, he wears ‘appropriate castle attire’, but when he’s questing with Ganon, he’s wearing his home clothes.

And then Zelda has the most bamf cloak ever, c’mon. It’s boss. The embroidery on it is gonna be wicked. I’ll draw the dress underneath when I find a pattern that calls to me.

I think the next step is secondary costumes and weapons. Like I said before, Ganondorf doesn’t use the Master Sword on just anything, so he’ll have other swords and weapons. I think Link is gonna get a sling slot or some shit. Zelda mostly rocks magic, but I love the thin saber from TP and want to use it, too, especially since the idea of an older woman tearing up ass with one of those is just too good to pass up
